14-year-old shortens her name to mirror her late mother's name, only for her father, who encouraged the name change prior, to forbid it when he remarries a jealous woman: 'She wanted that extra connection to her mom'

When a loved one passes on, it's likely imperative for those who are left behind to keep their memory alive. This is usually through art, clothing, estates, foundations, or namesakes. The 14-year-old girl in this next story wants to commemorate her late mother by shortening her name to "Cam," the same name her mother had. When her father remarries, his new wife refuses to acknowledge her as such and views this decision as a personal slight to her and the teen's father's new union. This is one of those "not everything is about you" moments.

Luckily, the teen has a support system of siblings and extended family who refuse to let this new woman try to erase the memory of their loved one, no matter how hard she may try. It is easy to blame the woman solely, but fault also falls on her father; he lost someone too, and instead of allowing his child the one way she knows how to feel close to her mother, he condemns it to preserve his new wife's feelings.
